Former President Jimmy Carter is reportedly “coming to the end” of his hospice care.
His grandson, Jason Carter, offered the update during the 28th Rosalynn Carter Georgia Mental Health Forum.
“He really is, I think, coming to the end that, as I’ve said before, there’s a part of this faith journey that is so important to him, and there’s a part of that faith journey that you only can live at the very end, and I think he has been there in that space,” Jason shared during his speech.
The 99-year-old has been under hospice guidance for over a year after deciding to end all medical interventions. Instead, it seems Mr. Carter was focused on being comfortable, wanting to remain in his home instead of being hospitalized. He entered the specialized treatment program in February 2023, months before his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, passed away in November. She was 96, and according to Jason, when she was nearing the end of her life, President Carter spent hours saying goodbye to her before she passed.
Carter was the 39th president, serving from 1977 to 1981, and has been adored for decades for his humility in and out of the White House. He signed the declaration to establish the Department of Education in 1979. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in easing tensions during international conflicts. He and Rosalynn helped build houses for families through Habitat for Humanity. In recent years, he has survived several life-threatening illnesses, including brain cancer at age 90.
