A newly filed lawsuit has pulled Jodie Turner-Smith into a serious legal dispute involving allegations against her brother, Richard Smith, while the actress’s team says the case is based on false claims from someone who has been harassing her.
The Jodie Turner-Smith lawsuit was reportedly filed Thursday, September 24, by three women identified only as Jane Does. According to TMZ, the plaintiffs accuse Richard of inviting them to gatherings where they allegedly encountered drugs, firearms, and people engaging in sexual activity. The women further claim Richard pressured some attendees to use drugs and participate in sexual activity. Those claims remain allegations presented in a civil lawsuit and have not been established as fact.
Jane Does 1 and 3 accuse Richard of pressuring them to use drugs and have sex with him. Jane Doe 3 also alleges Richard allowed her to live at a Los Angeles residence in exchange for sex. Jane Doe 1 claims she later discovered that the residence where some of the alleged conduct occurred belonged to Turner-Smith. The lawsuit uses that alleged property connection as part of its claims against the actress.
Jane Doe 2 makes additional allegations that directly connect Turner-Smith to her brother’s alleged activities. According to TMZ, the woman claims Richard told her his sister knew about an alleged drug operation and had used cocaine with him. The lawsuit also claims Richard told Jane Doe 2 that Turner-Smith helped finance a new supply of narcotics. Turner-Smith’s representative disputes the allegations and maintains that the lawsuit itself is not credible.
The complaint also includes an allegation involving a vehicle. Jane Doe 2 claims Richard said Turner-Smith gave him an Audi that “he used to transport packages to USPS that allegedly contained narcotics transported across state lines.” The allegation is attributed to what Jane Doe 2 says Richard told her, rather than to an independent finding that Turner-Smith knew how the vehicle was allegedly being used.
Jane Doe 2 also alleges Richard described himself as “more talented than” Turner-Smith and made “other statements expressing hostility toward Black women and members of his family.” According to The New York Post’s coverage of the lawsuit, the complaint contains broader accusations that Richard operated an illegal drug business and hosted gatherings involving drugs and sexual activity. Turner-Smith has not been accused in the reporting of personally committing sexual battery against the plaintiffs.
The claims against Richard include sexual battery, false imprisonment, emotional distress and fraud, according to TMZ. The Jodie Turner-Smith lawsuit targets the actress under separate legal theories, including property negligence, negligence per se, child endangerment and aiding and abetting. Those causes of action represent allegations from the plaintiffs, not a determination by a court that Turner-Smith committed wrongdoing.
Turner-Smith’s side is pushing back aggressively. A representative for the actress told TMZ, “This is a fictional lawsuit filed by someone who has been harassing Jodie while hiding behind the name Jane Doe. The claims are not true. This is an abuse of the legal system, allowing someone to make up facts and file meritless legal documents.”
That response also raises a major dispute over who is actually behind the complaint. Although the lawsuit identifies three separate Jane Does, Turner-Smith’s camp claims one individual is presenting herself as three different anonymous plaintiffs. TMZ reported that her representatives characterize that individual as someone who has been harassing the actress. No information cited in the current reporting establishes that allegation as a court finding, meaning the identity and number of plaintiffs could become an important issue as the case moves forward.
The timing puts Turner-Smith in the middle of a significant legal controversy built largely around accusations concerning another person’s alleged conduct and the extent of her own knowledge or involvement. While the plaintiffs contend that her property, money, and other resources were connected to Richard’s alleged activity, Turner-Smith’s team is denying the accusations outright and challenging the legitimacy of the lawsuit itself. For now, the competing versions remain unresolved allegations in a newly filed civil case, with no reported judicial finding establishing liability against Turner-Smith or her brother.
