John Boyega has been married for nearly two years without making a public announcement, and now he and his wife are preparing to welcome a baby boy. The actor also revealed that he already has a young stepson, giving fans a rare glimpse into a family life he has largely kept out of the spotlight.
The secret marriage came to light during an interview with The Guardian, published October 4, in which the 34-year-old actor discussed his childhood, personal growth, and involvement in a documentary about his late friend Damilola Taylor.
Boyega wasn’t initially discussing his relationship when the conversation took an unexpected turn. After the interviewer noticed a ring on his left hand, the Star Wars star casually acknowledged that he had been married for “coming up two years now.”
Rather than planning an extravagant celebrity wedding, Boyega and his wife chose an intimate ceremony. He jokingly compared the occasion to a scene from Braveheart, pretending to plant a sword into the ground before dramatically asking, “Will you come with me?”
Although the wedding was small, the details he shared suggest the couple found meaning in keeping things simple.
According to The Guardian, Boyega owns two wedding bands, including a two-toned ring with significant “sentimental” value. Surprisingly, that particular piece of jewelry came from an ordinary shopping trip rather than a luxury jeweler.
“This is the one we decided to pick up spontaneously because I just wanted the ring on my finger, so we went to Walmart to get this,” he explained.
He also remembered the experience fondly, adding, “It was a lovely trip to Walmart. Shout out, Walmart Canoga Park!”
For an actor who has appeared in some of Hollywood’s biggest productions, the spontaneous purchase offered a refreshingly simple detail about his secret marriage. The importance of the ring had little to do with its price and everything to do with what it represented.
Despite his Nigerian heritage, Boyega confirmed that the couple did not have a traditional Nigerian wedding ceremony. However, he hasn’t ruled out celebrating their marriage with a much larger gathering in the future.
“We both like the idea of celebrating something established, rather than celebrating the entry,” he explained.
And when that celebration finally happens, Boyega joked that it could become an unforgettable occasion.
“And by then, we’ll have to shut Nigeria down!”
The wedding wasn’t the only major family update Boyega shared.
During the same interview, he confirmed that his wife is pregnant and that they are expecting a son.
“We got a baby cooking,” he revealed.
Boyega expressed how much his growing family means to him, saying, “My life is completely, completely fulfilled in terms of family. It’s been so nice with the timing.”
The actor also confirmed that he has a young stepson. That detail adds another dimension to his experience with fatherhood, as he is already part of a family raising a child while preparing for another arrival.
While Boyega openly discussed his marriage and children, he did not identify his wife during The Guardian interview.
However, PEOPLE reported on October 13 that speculation has connected him romantically to actress and model Lashontae Heckard.
According to the publication, the two have attracted attention through their social media activity, including Heckard’s Instagram bio, which reportedly reads “Tae Boyega.” PEOPLE also pointed to photographs that appear to reference their relationship.
Still, those clues should not be mistaken for a direct confirmation of her identity as Boyega’s wife. The actor chose not to disclose his spouse’s name in the interview, leaving that part of his private life unaddressed.
Beyond the relationship speculation, Boyega’s comments about becoming a father offered a more personal look at how his priorities have changed.
His family announcement emerged during a conversation about “Damilola: The Untold Story,” a BBC documentary examining the death of his childhood friend Damilola Taylor.
According to The Guardian’s coverage of the documentary, Damilola was just 10 years old when he was fatally attacked in Peckham, South London, on November 27, 2000.
Boyega was eight at the time and was among the last people to see Damilola alive. The tragedy deeply affected his childhood and his understanding of violence, loss, and personal safety.
The documentary, which premiered on BBC Two on October 5, features Boyega and his sister Grace reflecting on their friendship with Damilola and the lasting emotional impact of his death.
That experience also provides important context for Boyega’s current perspective on family.
When discussing the kind of parent he hopes to be, the actor emphasized that his greatest concern is ensuring “I’m present, I’m consistent and full of love.”
For Boyega, that commitment also means reconsidering how much space his acting career occupies in his life.
“I’ve tried to, as much as possible – especially following periods when I’ve worked a lot – to de-centre my career,” he told The Guardian.
“There have been certain moments when I’ve known that this is a time for family. Y’know, there’s stuff to do.”
Boyega’s decision to prioritize his personal life marks an important chapter for an actor whose career has included “Attack the Block,” the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy, “The Woman King,” and “They Cloned Tyrone,” as documented by The Guardian.
His latest revelations also show that he has been building a life outside the entertainment industry’s constant attention, even while continuing to work in film.
With nearly two years of marriage behind him, a stepson already in his life, and another son on the way, Boyega appears focused on protecting the family he has built while remaining present for the moments that matter most.
