A piece of JR Smith’s past made the rounds in April 2013. Deadspin shared the senior yearbook quote the New York Knicks guard chose back in 2004, when he was finishing his time at Saint Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, New Jersey.
The line he picked to sum up his high school years was “Get chicks or die tryin.” Smith was already a star prospect at that point, and he went straight from Saint Benedict’s to the NBA draft. The quote has a very teenage sense of humor, and it is the kind of thing plenty of people would rather their old yearbook page not reveal.
Smith had not publicly commented on the quote when the story went around. Most coverage treated it as a lighthearted look back at a famously confident personality, and that is how we see it too.
