Grammy-nominated opera singer Jubilant Sykes, 71, known for his commanding stage presence and international career, was found fatally wounded in his Santa Monica home on the night of Monday, December 8. His wife placed the emergency call to 911 after witnessing an altercation involving their adult son.
Officers from the Santa Monica Police Department arrived around 9:19 p.m., entered the residence in the 1700 block of Delaware Avenue near 18th Street, and discovered Sykes in grave condition. Firefighters pronounced him dead at the scene.
The suspect, identified as his son, Micah Sykes, age 31, was taken into custody at the property and is facing booking for homicide with the case forwarded to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities say the incident appears to have been isolated to the family residence and does not pose a wider threat to the community.
Neighbors and church community members are reeling from the shocking turn of events. A long‑time tenant described the father as “cool people” and recalled that Sykes never seemed the sort to argue. The same tenant said that the son lived at the home and exhibited erratic behavior and signs of mental health issues.
Sykes gained acclaim through performances at world‑renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, The Metropolitan Opera and the Hollywood Bowl and earned a Grammy nomination for his role in Leonard Bernstein’s Mass. Yet despite his global reach he remained deeply connected to his local roots and faith community.
As the investigation continues the arts world and his hometown mourn the loss of a gifted voice silenced far too soon.
