February isn’t the only time you should celebrate Black History. That’s why Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat Productions and Comedy Dynamics have developed a two hour black history special set to premiere this year.

Kevin Hart Presents: The Black Man’s Guide to History will premiere on The History Channel in 2017 and will highlight the lives of lesser-known black history figures. The series begins with Kevin Hart’s daughter  watching 12 Years A Slave and becoming upset that the extent of black history being taught only touches on slavery.  Hart then uses this opportunity to educate his daughter through scripted re-enactments about not-so-famous but fascinating historical figures such as Matthew Henson, the first person to travel to the North Pole; Robert Smalls, an ex-slave who led a revolt on a Confederate warship and posed as the captain to evade capture; Mae Jemison, the first black female astronaut; and Henry “Box” Brown, a slave who courageously mailed himself to a free state in a box.

“I’m very excited to be working with History on this show because not only is it entertaining, and it’s hysterical, but it also is an important program for our country right now,” said Hart. “We hope to make people laugh and learn a bit too.”
