Keyshia Cole’s performance at Majic Under the Stars in Houston has fans joking that they bought concert tickets and ended up at karaoke night. In a clip from Saturday’s show at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, Keyshia lets the crowd carry most of “Heaven Sent” while she talks to them over the music.
Video:
“Can’t hear y’all,” Keyshia told the audience as the track played. “I picked this out again. It’s my birthday, sing with me.”
Then she made sure the crowd knew she still had it. “Y’all know I don’t [expletive] [expletive] up, don’t play with me,” she said. “Good old feelings. Come on, y’all know I be singing at this one, but come on.”
Keyshia turned 45 on October 15, so the Houston show came a little over a week after her actual birthday. Babyface headlined the night.
“Heaven Sent” is one of three No. 1 R&B singles from her 2007 album Just Like You, and it is a song fans know word for word. That did not stop social media from roasting the moment once the clip started circulating.
Angel King summed up the Keyshia Cole performance as “Karaoke night hosted by Keyshia Cole.” BILLYBADA$$ laughed at the idea of paying for tickets only to be told to sing. Dash Kennedy Williams joked that the audience showed up for a “from a distance meet and greet.” Quints zeroed in on the random birthday request, calling out the moment she asked the crowd to sing for her.
Not everyone piled on. Monica_Access came to Keyshia’s defense, pointing out that it was her birthday celebration and suggesting she may have been a little tipsy before asking people to give her a break.
Keyshia has not publicly responded to the clip.
