Knicks point guard Raymond Felton turned himself in to New York police early Tuesday and was arraigned on felony weapons charges, according to CBS News.
Felton, 29, surrendered at 12:50 a.m. with his lawyer and made no statement to police. In Manhattan Criminal Court he was arraigned on two counts: criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree and criminal possession of a firearm. Prosecutors said he kept a handgun in the couple’s home from August through February, loaded with 18 rounds, along with a large capacity magazine. Felton did not enter a plea, which is typical at this stage, and he was released on $25,000 bail.
The case began Monday evening when his wife, Ariane, through her lawyer, turned the gun in at a Manhattan police precinct. According to CBS News, she said she no longer wanted it in the home and gave a statement to detectives. Court records show she filed for divorce the week before. The couple married in July 2012.
Felton’s attorney, James Walden, told the judge his client has no interest in contact with his wife, and Felton agreed to stay away from her. Her attorney did not comment. Felton is due back in court on June 2. The NBA is monitoring the situation and could fine or suspend him, though the league typically waits for the legal process to wrap up.
Felton has not been convicted of anything. We will keep you posted as the case moves forward.
