After 25 years, the ongoing investigation for the disappearance of Kristin Smart has finally made headway. The main person of interest was arrested on Thursday in Los Angeles.
Paul Flores, now 43, was the last person to see her alive all those years ago; Smart has not been seen since 1999.
After being taken into custody last year for authorities to execute search warrants at both of his properties, Flores was finally brought in on gun charges, specifically “on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm,” according to the New York Post.
Police hope “to get evidence, including DNA, that may reveal what happened to Smart.”
Flores denies having any involvement in Smart’s disappearance. Sure, he was seen with Smart, then 19, walking on a path when she disappeared, but he claims he doesn’t know what happened.
At the time of her disappearance, Flores was questioned but never charged.
In 1997, police reported there were no other suspects.
Though her body was never found, Smart was declared dead in 2002.
Smart’s family has attempted to sue Flores in civil court, but he denies any involvement.
Flores is currently out of custody after posting a $35,000 bond.
A spokesperson for the family declined to provide any commentary.
