Kwame Kilpatrick plans to return to Detroit this weekend for a very important visit that will involve an appearance at a house of worship where the disgraced former mayor of the city will preach a powerful message about redemption.

The 57-year-old will take the pulpit Sunday at the Historic Little Rock Baptist Church in Detroit. He also told Deadline Detroit about his plans to remarry and study for the ministry.

Kilpatrick served more than seven years of a 28-year federal prison sentence for corruption crimes before being released in January by former President Donald Trump, who commuted his sentence.

Under the commutation, Kilpatrick’s prison sentence was reduced, but his 24 felony convictions remain. The former politician has to pay back $195,000 owed to the Internal Revenue Service and $1.5 million to the city of Detroit.

He told Deadline Detroit the visit was going to be his “hometown debut.” Explaining the importance of the appearance by saying, “This is the first time that I’ve done anything public since getting out of prison.”
