Florida Woman Opens Fire at Car Full of Teens in Public Park After Fight Turns Violent

A violent scene at Lake Betty Park in Port Charlotte has resulted in the arrest of 43-year-old Lakeshia Taylor.

According to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, what began as a physical fight between three teenagers quickly spiraled into a life-threatening shooting. On the afternoon of April 1, around 4:30 p.m., deputies rushed to the park following reports that multiple gunshots had been fired.

The investigation revealed that one of the juveniles involved initially, called Taylor for help. When Taylor arrived, she saw the caller on the ground while four other teens were trying to drive away. Instead of calling for medical help or law enforcement, Taylor pulled out a gun. She later admitted to investigators that she fired three rounds at the fleeing vehicle, claiming she was trying to keep them from leaving. The car was later found with bullet holes in the driver’s side door and the rear hatch.

“There were several poor decisions made in this situation, and we are fortunate that this did not become deadly. Regardless of the reason for the juveniles to have been fighting, they need to learn how to manage their emotions and walk away. The call made by the juvenile should have been to 911, which would have resulted in my deputies arriving quickly and preventing a lot of this mess. Lastly, discharging a firearm at an occupied vehicle is not only a dangerous crime, but to do it at a public park is even more reckless. There is no excuse for endangering the lives of innocent people,” Sheriff Bill Prummell said.

Sheriff’s officials emphasized that regardless of why the fight started, the introduction of a firearm made a bad situation significantly worse. Taylor was taken into custody and booked into the Charlotte County Jail, where she remains held without bond for discharging a weapon into an occupied vehicle.
