DIY Finds: Last-Minute Halloween Costumes Using Items Around Your House

Halloween Ghost

Halloween is almost here! Now imagine this: it’s the day before the spooky holiday, and you still don’t have a costume to ensure you win any special contests. Well, don’t worry because you’re not alone! Pulling together an outfit is already stressful enough, let alone a Halloween costume. But, you would be surprised at how items you already have lying around your house could be the perfect accessory to elevate your costume. Here are some quick, DIY costume ideas that you can easily whip up that’ll save you time and money.

Classic Sheet Ghost

Yea, we know this is an old school costume but you can never go wrong with the sheet ghost! All you need to pull off this look is a simple, white sheet. To add a bit of flair, cut out the eye holes or leave the entire draped over your head for an anonymous and mysterious appeal.

Ancient Mummy

If you have an extra stash supply of toilet paper, use this to wrap yourself to create a mummy costume. To make sure you have a mess-free costume, swap the toilet paper for cream-colored clothes or bandages. But, make sure your smudge a bit of makeup near your eyes to really intensify that ancient feel.

“Work From Home” Employee

Straying away the throwback costumes, the perfect look to highlight the current work culture is the “work from home” employee. This costume requires little to no effort, as you can simply throw on an a blazer over an oversized graphic t-shirt and sweatpants. For bonus points, put on a headset and grab a coffee mug to display that “active lazy” look.

Social Butterfly

Continuing on the path of the present, dressing as a social butterfly may be clever and eye-catching. To achieve this look, print out or draw logos of some social media platform like Instagram, X, TikTok, Facebook, Pinterest, etc. Next, stick the logos to your outfit. Add on a pair of butterfly wings and now, you’re a social butterfly!

Smarty Pants

For this costume, all you’ll need is a pair of pants and a handful of sticky notes. Write or draw “smart” things, such as equations or fun facts, on the sticky notes. Slap them on your pants and that’s it…costume complete! To add onto the “nerd” appeal, rock a pair of glasses and walk around dropping random trivia facts.

Nonetheless, for a few extra tips, try using your makeup creatively. Even if your costume is mainly basic clothing, a little face paint or makeup can bring your look to life. Use eyeliner to create “whiskers” for a cat costume or add green face paint to create the zombie look. You can also use hats, scarves, glasses, or belts to accessorize your costume. Just think about it, an apron can easily transform you into an artist or a chef.
