The infamous Lauryn Hill tax debt is back in the spotlight after new records revealed the singer still owes the State of New Jersey a significant amount in unpaid taxes.
According to state filings from the New Jersey Division of Taxation, two tax liens were issued against the Grammy-winning artist. One lien lists an unpaid balance of $133,246, while another shows a much larger amount totaling $758,912.02. Both liens remain active in the state’s system.
However, Hill’s team says the situation is already being addressed.
A spokesperson for the singer told TMZ, “Ms. Hill is complying with a repayment plan she entered into with the State of New Jersey to resolve state income tax liabilities incurred after cancellation of a tour, which greatly impacted the tour’s cash flow.”
The reported tax debt appears connected to the planned 2024 tour featuring Hill and the Fugees. The tour was canceled just days before the opening show, which the spokesperson said disrupted expected revenue tied to the performances.
Hill’s history with tax issues dates back more than a decade. In 2012, the acclaimed artist pleaded guilty to three counts of tax evasion after prosecutors said she failed to file tax returns on $1.8 million earned between 2005 and 2007.
She later served time at a federal correctional facility in Connecticut and was released in October 2013.
Now, more than ten years later, Hill’s camp says the current situation is being handled through a formal repayment agreement with the state.
