Legendary songwriter and musician William Harrison Withers, known professionally as “Bill Withers,” passed away on Monday from heart complications in Los Angeles.
Withers was best known for his classic hit “Lean on Me,” and had a resurgence in the late ’90s after his hit “Lovely Day” was featured in a Gap clothing campaign.
The three-time Grammy Award winner was known for other hits like “Ain’t No Sunshine,” and “Use Me.” He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2015 by Stevie Wonder and last released an album in 1985.
“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved, devoted husband and father,” the family’s statement said. “A solitary man with a heart-driven to connect to the world at large, with his poetry and music, he spoke honestly to people and connected them to each other,” his family said in a statement to the Associated Press.
The family also added, “As private a life as he lived close to intimate family and friends, his music forever belongs to the world. In this difficult time, we pray his music offers comfort and entertainment as fans hold tight to loved ones.”
