Heavyweight champion George Foreman has passed away at 76, his family announced Friday.

“Our hearts are broken,” the family wrote on Instagram. “With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr., who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.”

A towering figure in and out of the ring, Foreman was not only a two-time heavyweight champion but also a man of deep faith and purpose. “A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose,” the post continued.

Foreman’s impact stretched beyond boxing. “A humanitarian, an Olympian, and two-time heavyweight champion of the world, he was deeply respected — a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name — for his family.”

His family expressed gratitude for the support they received, asking for privacy as they mourn.

Foreman first gained global attention in 1968, winning Olympic gold by defeating Jonas Čepulis. He then dominated the boxing world, defeating Joe Frazier in 1973 to claim the heavyweight title. However, he suffered a legendary defeat to Muhammad Ali in the 1974 “Rumble in the Jungle.”
