Deadbeat dads get all the attention, but let’s be honest: deadbeat moms exist too. Let’s give fathers a break for a second and talk about the mothers who aren’t doing right by their kids.
The worst part is that some of these women have custody. Courts often favor the mother, but that doesn’t always mean the child is in the best hands. Being present isn’t the same thing as being a good parent.
Start with the women who put men ahead of their children. They love their kids, but they don’t see that every time the new boyfriend comes first, the children come second. We’ve seen it play out on reality TV more than once, with a mother snapping at her own kids over something the man in her life wanted. A grown man can buy his own pizza. If any man wants to be in my life, he needs to understand my child comes first, and if my child is hungry, my child eats first.
Then there are the mothers who don’t put their child first even before the baby is born. Smoking, drinking or using drugs while pregnant puts a child at risk before they ever get a say in it. Nine months is not too much to ask for someone who is trusting you with their whole life.
And if a man left his child home alone for days to go chase women, the world would call him a monster. The same standard should apply to mothers who leave their kids to fend for themselves. Unfit is unfit, no matter who the parent is.
So before we bash every man who walks away from his children, remember that there are women who stay and still do their kids a disservice. And there are plenty more people who make excuses for them.
