Le’Veon Bell arrived at an Ohio mall to sign memorabilia Sunday and left in police custody. The arrest followed a child support warrant tied to more than $50,000 in alleged unpaid support. Meanwhile, local reporting said the former Pittsburgh Steelers running back remained in the Stark County Jail on Monday pending transfer to the jurisdiction behind the warrant.
Jackson Township police took Bell into custody at approximately 3:30 p.m. on July 19 at Belden Village Mall in Canton, according to WKYC, citing the Stark County Sheriff’s Office. Bell had been appearing at a scheduled autograph event at Prime Time Sports & Framing. An event listing placed the signing between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., meaning the handcuffs reportedly came shortly after the meet-and-greet wrapped.
The arrest record reportedly described Bell’s detention as a “courtesy hold for another agency,” and jail information showed a booking time of 3:33 p.m. Bell’s attorney, Thomas Shaffer, later confirmed that the matter involved child support.
“Le’Veon is struggling to make support payments, which are based on a healthy NFL salary — a salary he’s not earned in years,” Shaffer told TMZ.
Shaffer also told the outlet that Bell allegedly owes more than $50,000 and used his entire $50,000 NFL pension earlier this year toward child support. According to the attorney, Bell plans to explain his financial situation to a judge. The pension payment remains an assertion from Bell’s legal team and has not been independently confirmed through publicly available court documents.
TMZ reported that the child connected to the case lives in Michigan and that the warrant involves the Michigan Attorney General’s Office. Bell reportedly lives in California, creating a three-state situation after authorities detained him while he was visiting Ohio. As of July 20, the Michigan Attorney General’s public news page did not include a statement identifying Bell or detailing the case.
The argument from Bell’s attorney centers on a financial reality that follows many professional athletes long after their playing careers end. Support obligations may reflect income earned during an athlete’s highest-paid years, while those paychecks can disappear quickly once the career ends. Still, the publicly available reporting does not show when Bell’s support order was established, how the court calculated it or whether he previously requested a modification.
Bell once commanded the type of salary that could produce a substantial support order. Pittsburgh selected him with the 48th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, and he became one of the league’s top dual-threat running backs. He earned three Pro Bowl selections and two First-Team All-Pro honors during his prime with the Steelers.
However, Bell’s career took a dramatic turn when he sat out the entire 2018 season after refusing to sign Pittsburgh’s franchise tender. The following year, he agreed to a reported four-year, $52.5 million contract with the New York Jets. The Jets released him in October 2020, less than two seasons into the deal.
Bell later played for the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has not appeared in an NFL game since 2021, instead shifting his attention toward boxing, streaming and other media ventures.
Separately, Bell continues to face the fallout from a multimillion-dollar civil judgment in Ohio. A relative filed a lawsuit in 2024 accusing Bell and his brother, La’Vonte Bell, of sexual abuse during her childhood. Neither brother appeared in court, and a default judgment followed. A Franklin County jury later awarded the relative $25 million in damages from Le’Veon Bell and $11 million from La’Vonte Bell.
Bell has denied the allegations. His attorney previously argued that Bell never received proper service and said he planned to challenge the judgment. The relative’s attorney, John Camillus, maintained that Bell had been served. Neither Bell nor his brother faced criminal charges connected to those allegations, according to WOSU.
That civil judgment and the current child support arrest remain separate legal matters. Still, they now form a complicated financial and legal picture around an athlete who once signed one of football’s biggest running back contracts.
For now, the immediate questions concern Bell’s transfer, the exact terms of the support order and what financial records his attorney will present in court. Until those documents become public, the claim that an outdated NFL salary created the debt remains Bell’s side of the story, not a confirmed court finding.
