The legal landscape for Lil Durk has shifted dramatically as renowned defense attorney Brian Steel officially joins his team. Newly filed court documents reveal that Steel is set to replace attorney Jonathan M. Brayman in the federal murder-for-hire case.
This high-profile addition comes just as the court pushed the trial date to late summer, giving the defense more time to prepare against a complex federal indictment.
Steel became a household name in hip-hop for his relentless work on Young Thug’s marathon RICO trial, which eventually saw the Atlanta rapper walk free after more than two years in custody. Steel’s dedication was so absolute that he famously faced jail time himself for refusing to disclose confidential sources to the judge. This reputation for unwavering client loyalty has made him a hero in the industry, even inspiring a dedicated track by Drake and PartyNextDoor on their recent collaborative project.
In a recent appearance on Killer Mike’s Conversate podcast, Steel addressed the federal government’s high conviction rate with a simple, defiant “Not with us.” That confidence will be put to the test as he joins lead attorney Drew Findling to defend Durk against allegations of orchestrating a 2022 retaliatory hit in Los Angeles.
The trial was recently rescheduled by U.S. District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald after a request to try the co-defendants separately was denied. The judge ruled that because the group is accused of a singular conspiracy, the proceedings must remain joint. Jury selection is now officially slated to begin on August 20, 2026.
Durk has remained in federal custody since his arrest in October 2024 and continues to deny all charges.
