Lil Nas X is grieving one of the most personal losses of his life after announcing that his mother, Tameka Hill, has died, bringing renewed attention to a complicated relationship he spent years discussing only in rare and deeply personal moments.

The 27-year-old rapper, born Montero Lamar Hill, shared the news Saturday, August 29, posting three photographs of his mother that stretched across different chapters of their lives. His message was short, but there was nothing casual about it.
“RIP TO THE BADDEST EVER! LOVE U FOREVER MOMMY. this one’s gonna hurt. 🥹🥹,” he wrote on Instagram.
No cause of death or age for Hill had been publicly confirmed as of publication. That distinction matters because while Lil Nas X has previously spoken openly about his mother’s addiction battle, there has been no verified indication that addiction played a role in her death.
What is known is that their story was never simple.
Lil Nas X has said his parents separated when he was young. He spent part of his childhood living with his grandmother before his father, Robert Stafford, eventually gained custody. Speaking with CBS Sunday Morning in 2022, the Grammy-winning star explained that he and his mother had once been close before addiction changed the dynamics inside their family.
“Me and my mom, we were kind of close growing up, until addiction got in the way,” he said. By that point, however, he indicated the relationship had improved, adding, “Right now, you know, we’re on good terms. I try to make sure she’s always taken care of.”
That was a noticeably different chapter from the one he described publicly two years earlier.
During a 2020 interview with Variety, Lil Nas X acknowledged how difficult his mother’s addiction had made their relationship.
“I never really talk about my mom,” he said. “She’s an addict so we don’t have the closest relationship.”
Tameka Hill and Lil Nas X’s father, Robert Stafford, also have two other children, Lil Nas X’s full brothers Lamarco and Tramon Hill. The rapper comes from a larger blended family and has several half-siblings through his parents, including a younger half-brother, Yai Ariza Hill, who has spoken publicly about their family. Lil Nas X has previously described growing up surrounded by siblings, and family has remained part of his life even as his career took him from Georgia to international fame. His brother Tramon has also appeared alongside him publicly, including in the 2023 documentary “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero,” which offered viewers a closer look at the superstar beyond his stage persona.
