Lionel Richie Hospitalized In ICU After St. Louis Show As Another Health Scare Raises Concern

Lionel Richie’s latest night onstage ended with another unexpected health turn. The 77-year-old music legend is reportedly hospitalized in an intensive care unit in St. Louis after performing Saturday night at The Muny in Forest Park. The Lionel Richie hospitalization report surfaced Monday, with TMZ reporting that Richie checked himself into a local hospital following the concert to undergo testing. Doctors are reportedly examining possible slight dehydration as a factor.

According to TMZ, Richie sought medical attention as a precaution rather than being transported from the venue during this latest incident. The outlet reported that he hopes to be discharged Tuesday, September 1. His representatives had not responded to TMZ’s request for comment as of the outlet’s latest update.

What makes the hospitalization especially notable is what happened before Richie left the stage.

Concertgoers told TMZ that the singer appeared to struggle somewhat toward the end of the performance. While closing the show with “All Night Long,” Richie reportedly asked his team to bring him a chair so he could finish the song while seated.

Richie had already discussed his recent health problems with the St. Louis crowd earlier that night.

The St. Louis American reported that Richie told the audience recent issues on tour had left him searching for answers. He said a doctor ultimately told him he was suffering from dehydration. The newspaper reported that Richie continued performing Saturday, taking several sips of electrolytes as he delivered a set packed with songs from his decades-long career.

The Muny performance was billed as the historic outdoor theater’s annual summer concert finale. The venue announced Richie as the headliner for the one-night-only August 29 event, adding another major name to a revived concert tradition at the Forest Park theater.

However, Richie’s hospitalization comes just over two months after another health scare interrupted his tour.

During a June 24 performance in St. Paul, Minnesota, Richie became ill onstage and told the audience he felt “dizzy” and “strange.” He ended the concert early before paramedics met him backstage and transported him to a hospital by ambulance.

That episode forced Richie to temporarily hit the brakes on his Sing A Song All Night Long Tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.

A statement issued after the June incident said doctors advised Richie to rest, leading to the postponement of concerts scheduled in Chicago and Columbus, Ohio. He returned to the stage June 30 in Pittsburgh.

Days later, Richie gave fans an encouraging update.

In a July Instagram post, the Grammy-winning singer said he was “doing well” and thanked supporters for the messages and love they sent after his hospitalization. He continued performing following the brief interruption.

Now, the St. Louis hospitalization puts his health back in focus.

There is an important distinction in the current reporting. TMZ says doctors are looking into possible slight dehydration, but no final diagnosis connected to the latest hospitalization has been publicly announced. Richie’s representatives also have not released their own statement confirming additional medical details.

That means anything beyond the reported testing and possible dehydration would be speculation.

Still, Saturday’s sequence stands out. Richie spoke publicly about dehydration during the concert, powered through the performance, needed a chair for his closing number, and later checked himself into a hospital for testing.

For an artist whose live shows have remained a major part of his career more than five decades after his rise with the Commodores, it marks the second reported hospitalization connected to an onstage health issue this summer.

For now, the biggest question is what comes next. Richie reportedly hopes to leave the hospital Tuesday, but there has been no official announcement from his team regarding whether the hospitalization will affect upcoming performances.
