In sports, heated exchanges are the norm. Tensions are high with the game on the line and any sudden movement can spark a brief scuffle on the field or the court. However, things never really get too serious. But, other players always jump in for their teammates, just in case things go left.

So, when Lonzo Ball walked away from a scuffle between Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Tyler Ulis, many began to wonder why the rookie took the alternate route.

In the fourth quarter of the Phoenix Suns’ 122-113 win over the Los Angeles Lakers, the two ballers began to push and shove, as others quickly intervened. Some to break up the minor altercation and others to retaliate, but Lonzo was seen walking in the opposite direction.

As the scuffle replayed on the highlight reel, the focus remained on Lonzo’s exit. After the game, when asked about his decision to walk away, he said he was trying to refrain from getting hit with a technical foul, adding that the players weren’t really going to throw hands.

“It’s the NBA,” he said. “People ain’t really gonna fight, so I ain’t tryna get no tech.”

Although Brandon Ingram intervened in the scuffle, he sided with his teammate, saying the altercation was “all false action.”
