A Los Angeles area family tragedy led to a murder charge in April 2016. According to CNN, 69 year old Shehada was charged with the premeditated murder of his 38 year old son, Amir, in the North Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles. Prosecutors said a shotgun was used.
CNN reported that investigators also found Amir’s mother dead inside the home. Shehada told police he found his wife in the bathroom of the house. He said he later heard noises, thought there might be an intruder, and armed himself. He told authorities that he then came face to face with his son, who he claimed was threatening him with a knife, and a shooting followed.
Police did not accept that account. Los Angeles Police Department Homicide Detective John Doerbecker said the man claimed his son was armed with a knife, but no knife was found, and called the case a horrible family tragedy.
Neighbors told reporters they heard several gunshots on Tuesday morning and said they often heard arguing from inside the home. Detectives were also looking at whether a domestic dispute played a role.
Shehada was being held without bail and could face life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted. He was scheduled to be arraigned on April 11. As with any case, a charge is not a conviction.
