The long running era of VH1 reality dominance is officially coming to an end.
Paramount announced on Friday that the “Love & Hip Hop,” franchise that has defined the genre since its 2011 New York premiere, is shutting down. After years of producing viral moments and memes that took over the internet, the network is preparing a grand exit for the show.
To celebrate its 15-year run, a six-part special called “Love & Hip Hop: The Final Chapter” is set to air later this fall. According to the press release, the series “explores the rise of its breakout stars, the business empires they built, the headlines that dominated the conversation, and the franchise’s lasting cultural impact.”
Lashan Browning, the executive producer of the upcoming special, emphasized that the farewell is a tribute to the cast and the viewers who stayed loyal. “The ‘Love & Hip Hop’ franchise has always been about the people,” she said. “The incredible talent who trusted us with their real lives, the exceptional producers who poured themselves into every storyline, my extraordinary team at Antoinette Media who showed up and showed out season after season, and the viewers who were here for all of it.”
The special will bring together voices from all four major cities: New York, Atlanta, Hollywood, and Miami. It will be “featuring new interviews with cast members from every city, alongside the producers and executives who brought the franchise to life, as well as journalists and cultural critics who have followed its evolution from the beginning.”
This comprehensive retrospective aims to showcase how the show “reshaped reality television and left an undeniable mark on the culture.”
While the main franchise prepares for its finale, some spin-offs are still currently on the air. “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta” and “Love & Hip Hop: Miami” will continue their current seasons on MTV and BET, respectively. The Miami cast just returned for their midseason premiere on April 8, which should conclude before the “Final Chapter” event begins.
Browning noted that they are focused on ensuring the ending hits the right note “for every fan who’s been rocking with us from day one. Once more for the culture.”
This news comes shortly after the announcement that another VH1 staple, “Basketball Wives,” was also coming to an end, signaling that the network is officially dropping its classic reality lineup.
The series was instrumental in the early success of major names like Joseline Hernandez and Cardi B, Spice, and more, proving its legacy was a launchpad for superstardom.
