Victoria Monét says she never called Drake a “professional trick,” and she wants the headlines fixed.
“False news btw. The interviewer mentioned his name. I did not. He also didn’t respond. This is a comment from August that media is trying to run with,” the singer wrote after clips from her Complex sit down started circulating with her face attached to Drake’s name.
The moment came during a conversation about “tricking,” slang for spending money or buying gifts for someone in exchange for their time, attention, or intimacy. Complex interviewer Jillian Superstar is the one who brought up Drake, describing him as a “professional trick.” Victoria Monét laughed. She did not say his name. She did not sign off on the label. The internet ran with it like she did anyway.
She wrapped her correction with a plug. “But here is some true information: my new album Frequency Of Love is out now. Sending everyone loooove,” she added.
Victoria Monét did not explain what she meant by a comment from August, and that part of her post remains unclear.
Her “he also didn’t respond” line is raising eyebrows, because Drake has reportedly weighed in. In a comment under an Instagram post from Level Up Hip Hop, the rapper defended his generosity, writing that “there’s a return on investment in your soul for doing things for people who you feel deserve it.” He described spending on others as a way to acknowledge “consistent love and loyalty,” with no expectation on the other side, and drew his line plainly: “Transactional exchanges with the expectation of intimacy are a different frequency.” Whether Victoria Monét had seen that comment when she posted is unclear. Drake picking the word frequency while her album Frequency of Love is out now is a coincidence the timeline did not miss.
There is no bad blood on her end. Months ago on Angel Reese’s Unapologetically Angel podcast, Victoria Monét said she still wants to work with Drake. “Love Drake. Yeah, he’s amazing,” she said.
