Luigi Mangione Identified as Person of Interest

Authorities have identified 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, an ex-Ivy League student and former valedictorian, as a person of interest in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione was taken in for questioning at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after an employee recognized him from NYPD wanted posters.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed Mangione’s detention, stating that he was found carrying multiple fake IDs, including a U.S. passport, and a gun with a silencer resembling the weapon used in Thompson’s killing. “At this time, he is believed to be our person of interest in the brazen, targeted murder of Brian Thompson,” Tisch said.

Thompson, 50, was shot in a chilling attack captured on surveillance video, which showed the gunman firing multiple rounds into his back with a silenced pistol before fleeing the scene. Investigators have described the killing as a “premeditated, preplanned, targeted attack.”

Sources close to the investigation revealed that Mangione was taken into custody on an unrelated gun charge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, as officials worked to confirm his connection to Thompson’s murder. NYPD and FBI investigators, who had tracked the suspect’s movements from a Manhattan hostel to a bus headed for Atlanta, offered a combined reward of $60,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Police had previously found what they believe to be the gunman’s backpack in Central Park but were unable to locate the weapon. The investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement continues to piece together evidence linking Mangione to the high-profile case.

“This is a strong person of interest,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said. “He matches the description we’ve been looking for and is in possession of items that may connect him to the incident.”
