MacKenzie Scott just made another massive move, and this time it’s hitting one of America’s most urgent pressure points: hunger and isolation.
The billionaire philanthropist quietly dropped a $70 million unrestricted donation to Meals on Wheels America, adding another headline to her ongoing run of high-impact giving. The organization supports more than 2 million seniors and homebound individuals each year, but demand is rising fast. Right now, one in three local providers has a waitlist, with some elderly Americans waiting months just to receive basic meal services.
Scott’s latest contribution is designed to help change that. According to Meals on Wheels America, the funding will strengthen long-term infrastructure while also giving local providers more flexibility to meet immediate needs. That matters because the gaps aren’t small, and they’re growing.
“We will steward the investment thoughtfully and responsibly to help generate economies of scale and impact that strengthen the capacity of local providers so they can reach more older adults with meals, connection and care,” said Kristine Templin, the organization’s chief development and marketing officer.
“Ultimately, success means more seniors are able to access the support they need to live more nourished, independent, and healthy lives.”
While some billionaires continue to face criticism over unfulfilled pledges, Scott keeps moving differently. Since 2020, she has given away roughly $26 billion through her Yield Giving initiative, often with no restrictions attached. That approach flips the usual script, putting trust directly in the hands of nonprofits instead of tying them to rigid conditions.
The $70 million donation is significant, but even Meals on Wheels acknowledges it won’t solve everything. The need is still outpacing resources. Still, Scott’s move sends a clear signal, and the hope is that others with similar means are paying attention.
