Malik Beasley might have dodged charges in a federal gambling investigation, but his name is still on the radar of NBA officials.
The league has launched its own probe into the free agent guard over allegations tied to betting on games and player props during his time with the Milwaukee Bucks last season.
A league spokesperson confirmed the ongoing investigation to ESPN, while sources say it stems from suspicious gambling activity flagged during the 2023-24 season. At least one sportsbook reportedly noticed strange betting patterns involving Beasley’s rebound totals earlier this year.
The NBA’s concerns echo details from a federal investigation conducted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. That probe led to multiple guilty pleas in a gambling scheme linked to former player Jontay Porter. While Beasley’s name came up, his attorney Steve Haney made it clear his client wasn’t a target.
“He is fully cooperating,” Haney said about the league’s inquiry.
The timing of the scandal couldn’t have been worse. Just as Beasley was preparing to sign a $42 million deal with the Detroit Pistons, the offer was pulled. Since then, teams have reportedly remained interested, and Beasley hinted on Instagram that a decision is coming soon.
The league’s review is said to be nearing its end, but whether it clears his name, or adds more smoke to the fire, remains to be seen.
