Police are investigating a possible hate crime after a white man assaulted an elderly Black man who had “BLM” written on his car.

Police say that 35-year-old Kyle Davis of Thousand Oaks drove up next to a 70-year-old Black man on Saturday afternoon. Davis began shouting racial slurs at the victim and threw an object at his vehicle. Luckily, the man was not injured and provided a statement to the police soon after. Authorities believe that Davis’s attack was racially motivated by the Black Lives Matter reference on the man’s car.

After law enforcement officers searched Davis’s home, he was arrested and served with a gun violence restraining order. Police temporarily seized firearms, ammunition, and magazines under this order, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

On Monday, Davis was jailed on suspicion of assault, elder abuse, and violating a person’s civil rights. He has since been released on a $50,000 bond. He is scheduled back in Ventura Superior Court on April 19th.
