A man has been arrested in connection with a disturbing subway attack on an elderly woman in New York City that went viral. Marc, 36, of Yonkers was taken into custody over the weekend after the video spread online, according to ABC7 New York and the New York Post.
Police say the attack happened just after 3 a.m. on March 10 aboard a northbound 2 train in Wakefield, the Bronx. According to authorities, a man kicked and punched a 78 year old woman in the face and body, leaving her bleeding. Police also said other passengers did not step in and that several recorded the incident on their phones.
The NYPD posted the suspect’s photo on social media, and police say a member of the public recognized him and called it in. He was arrested in Greenwich Village. NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea announced the arrest on Twitter and said the woman is getting the care and support she needs.
Marc was charged with assault and harassment, and bail was set at $30,000 bond or $15,000 cash, per ABC7. The New York Post reported that prosecutors pointed to his prior record.
Marc has not been convicted. His court appointed lawyer told the Post that the woman threatened his client and showed a sharp object, an account that police have not confirmed. The woman’s name has not been released.
