A Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to probation after admitting he cast a ballot in the name of his late mother during the 2020 election.
Bruce, 70, was sentenced to five years of probation last Friday after pleading guilty to two counts of perjury and one count of unlawful voting, according to court records and the Delaware County District Attorney’s office. Prosecutors said he voted in his mother’s name, even though she passed away in 2019, and that he was trying to help re-elect Donald Trump.
According to voting records cited in the case, Bruce used the state’s online voter registration portal to register his late mother and his late mother-in-law as Republican voters. He then requested absentee ballots in their names, filled them out and mailed them in.
As part of the sentence, he reportedly will not be able to vote for four years.
Bruce’s defense attorney said the pandemic and being stuck at home left him believing “propaganda and statements” about voter fraud. “He accepts the responsibility,” the attorney said in court.
