The Florida man who fired a gunshot at perpetual menace George Zimmerman, was sentenced to 20 years in prison Monday for attempted murder.
Matthew Apperson, 38, had testified that he shot at Zimmerman in self-defense during a road rage incident last year. He said Zimmerman’s intimidating reputation — especially for his fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, made him fear for his life.
Apperson’s wife, Lisa, stood in front of the judge, accused her of making unfair rulings and allowing an innocent man, her husband, to go to jail.
Lisa Apperson said, authorities have “given George Zimmerman a golden ticket to go out and do whatever he wants to do.”
Twenty years is Florida’s mandatory minimum sentence for shooting at another person with a gun. But how is that so when Zimmerman infamously walked free after shooting and killing Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager in 2012? Zimmerman, who was a volunteer neighborhood watchman at the time, claimed self-defense and was acquitted.
