A man accused of spiking his wife’s cereal with heroin was convicted of murder after testing on a sample of her breast milk helped prove the case.
The Detroit medical examiner had classified Christina Harris‘ death in 2014 as an accidental overdose. But investigators subsequently alleged that it was a murder scheme hatched by her husband, Jason Harris.
The woman’s family had insisted that she didn’t use drugs and a sample of frozen breast milk showed no evidence.
Prosecutors alleged that Harris spiked his wife’s cereal with enough heroin to cause her to overdose.
“This was a very tragic case, and my heart goes out to the family and friends,” prosecutor David Leyton said in a press conference.
Leyton also alleged that Jason Harris tried to hire a hitman to get rid of his wife and had other relationships outside of their marriage.
Harris was charged for his wife’s death in 2019, five years after her murder. He received a $120,000 life insurance payout and another woman moved into the home within two weeks of her death.
Harris will be sentenced next t month and faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
