On Thursday, a New Orleans grand jury indicted Cardell Hayes on a charge of second-degree murder in the shooting death of former Saints player Will Smith. The grand jury also charged him with attempted second-degree murder against Smith’s wife, Racquel, aggravated criminal damage to a vehicle, and aggravated assault, in relation to the tragic and fatal incident that occurred on April 9.

What started out as a traffic dispute that night turned deadly after Hayes allegedly opened fire on Smith and his wife. Smith was shot seven times in the back and once in the chest, and his wife Racquel was hit twice, once in each leg. Hayes was arrested on the scene and has been held in jail since on $1 million bond.

Hayes’ lawyer insists that he was not the aggressor in the situation, and that he is “legally not guilty” of murder, while the lawyer for the Smith family claims that Hayes was “enraged” during the incident and murdered Smith “in cold blood”.
