A text exchange between a Michigan mother and her manager went viral in early July 2018, and the company behind the store responded quickly.
According to reports from outlets including Fox 2 Detroit and CBS News, a PS Food Mart employee named Crystal shared screenshots on June 30 of messages with her manager, Dawn. In them, Crystal said she could not make her shift while her son was on life support. The manager reportedly replied that it was not how things were done there and that she would treat the message as a resignation.
Crystal wrote back that she had never said she was quitting and asked how things were supposed to work when a child is on life support. The manager reportedly said she had already been flexible with scheduling and that she would not tolerate drama. Crystal said she planned to contact the corporate office.
After the screenshots spread online, the company that owns the store posted a statement on Facebook. It said an internal review found the request was handled improperly and without the compassion the company values, and it apologized. The company said the manager was no longer employed and that Crystal would be able to take all the time off she needed.
The manager has not been quoted publicly in the reports we reviewed. Baller Alert is sending good thoughts to Crystal and her family.
