The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office is currently considering charging Steve Bannon for the same border wall fundraising campaign fraud scheme that he was federally charged for and then granted a presidential pardon by Donald Trump.
According to CNN, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance’s Major Economic Crimes Bureau office is currently discussing whether a state case can be brought against Bannon for his role in the scheme.
Last month, Bannon received a last-minute pardon from Trump for federal charges that claimed that he and three others defrauded donors of more than a million dollars as part of a fundraising campaign that was purportedly aimed at helping Trump build his border wall.
Bannon and three other cohorts were accused of allegedly using hundreds of thousands of dollars that Trump supporters donated to an online crowdfunding campaign called “We Build the Wall” for their own personal expenses, among other things.
The Washington Post, who broke the story, also reported that it’s not clear if the US attorney’s office in Manhattan handling Bannon’s case, which has not formally been dismissed, will work with the state prosecutor’s office to assist in their investigation. It’s also unclear if a judicial “sharing order” necessary to swap evidence between the two offices has been secured.
