A manhunt is underway in Liberty County, Texas, after one woman was found chained to a bed and another woman was found dead in a burning car, according to Newsweek and local officials.
Authorities say one of the women called 911 for help on Saturday night. According to Newsweek, deputies who arrived found her chained to a bed by the ankle with a rope around her neck. Officials also found the body of her friend in a burning car on the property.
Detectives said the woman who called for help told them she was sexually assaulted at gunpoint shortly after arriving at the home with her friend. Newsweek reports the two women had been hired to clean the house, and that the friend was allegedly told photos of her would be deleted if she came to the home.
Neither woman has been publicly named. Officials identified the suspect as Jose, 59, and described him as armed and dangerous. He had not been located at the time of this report.
According to the report, the woman who died tried to get away in a car on the property, crashed into a wooded area, and the vehicle caught fire. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and investigators noted a suspected gunshot wound.
The surviving woman was able to use the suspect’s phone to call for help after he left, and she was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Police are still investigating what happened. Anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts is urged to contact local law enforcement.
