Marlon Wayans is pushing back against critics of his latest film “HIM.”
The horror-sports thriller, which opened in theaters on September 19, received a rocky start with a 28 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But the actor and producer is refusing to let critics shape the public narrative.
In an Instagram post, Wayans acknowledged the negative reviews but argued that groundbreaking films often face early resistance. “Some movies are ahead of the curve,” he said. “Innovation is not always embraced.”
To drive his point home, Wayans posted screenshots of other low-scoring films he’s starred in, such as “White Chicks” and “Scary Movie,” which went on to become pop culture staples.
“HIM” follows a promising young quarterback, played by Tyriq Withers, who finds himself pulled into a dark underworld of sacrifice and manipulation in the NFL. Wayans plays a seasoned vet who shows him the ropes, but not everything comes without a cost.
Wayans left fans with a simple message: “Don’t take anyone’s opinion. Just go see for yourself.”
The film is currently in theaters nationwide.
