Mary J. Blige is teaming up with Oscar-winning filmmaker Vanessa Roth and long-time collaborator and friend, Sean Combs to produce a documentary about her life and career. The untitled doc will take fans into Blige’s highs and lows before and during her time in the music industry. This includes her rise from poverty, abuse, cocaine addiction, finding love, and experiencing a painful divorce from her now ex-husband, Kendu Issacs. Blige will also take us behind the scenes of her “My Life” concert series, as she approaches the 25th anniversary of her highly acclaimed sophomore album, which was ranked as one of Time Magazine’s All-Time 100 Albums.
Blige, alongside Ashaunna Ayars, and Nicole Jackson under her Blue Butterfly production company, will serve as executive producer as well as Tara Long of eOne, Kevin Lopez of Creature Films and Sean “Diddy” Combs. The documentary will stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
Matt Newman, Co-Head of Movies at Amazon Studios, released a statement about the project, saying, “We all know Mary J. Blige as the two-time Oscar nominee, Grammy Award-winning, multi-hyphenate who has sold over 80 million records. But through this documentary, audiences will see a raw and honest side of Mary J. Blige opening up about her personal journey of redemption and healing. We are thrilled to share with our worldwide Prime Video customers this exclusive, never-before-seen, inside look into the global legend, Mary J. Blige.”
In addition to being an R&B and hip hop veteran, Blige has TV credits that include Starz’s ”Power” and Netflix’s ”The Umbrella Academy.” She also landed two Oscar nominations for best supporting actress and best original song for the 2017 drama ”Mudbound,” becoming the first person ever nominated in both of those categories in the same year.
There is no word yet on when the film will be released on the streaming platform. However, a story as captivating as hers is long overdue.
