Yahya Abdul-Mateen II just landed the lead role in the upcoming continuation of The Matrix franchise. Abdul-Mateen recently played in “Aquaman” and the “Striking Vipers” “Black Mirror” episode.

According to Variety, director Lana Wachowski met with multiple actors for the “secret role” over the past week. Abdul-Mateen shined and emerged as the frontrunner, and will now join the cast along with original franchise stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss.

Plot details are still unconfirmed, as well as the rumors surrounding young Morpheus. In fact, Abdul-Mateen’s specific role has yet to be confirmed.

Production on the fourth Matrix is slated to begin in early 2020.

Warner Bros. officially announced the return of the Matrix back in August, and Warner Bros. Picture Group confirmed that Lana Wachowski would be co-writing and directing.

“Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing, and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe,” Emmerich stated at the time.

Outside of “Aquaman” and “Black Mirror,” Abdul-Mateen’s other credits include “The Get Down,” “Us,” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.” In the near future, he’ll star as Cal Abar in HBO’s “Watchmen” series.
