The Nolan Wells death has become one of the most closely watched cases in the country, and almost a week after his body was pulled from the water off a remote Mississippi barrier island, the people who loved him still do not have a cause of death. What they have instead is a growing list of things that do not line up.

Nolan Xavier Wells was 18 years old, a wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College and a 2025 graduate of Ocean Springs High School, where he had been a multi sport athlete. He would have turned 19 next month. On the night of July 3 he cooked salmon for his family, told his mother he loved her, hugged her, and left to stay with friends ahead of the holiday weekend. That was the last time Christine Wonsley saw her son.

On July 4, Nolan traveled by boat with a group of high school friends to Horn Island, an undeveloped strip of land roughly ten miles off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It is reachable only by private boat. It has no facilities, no drinking water, no staff and no cell service. He was last seen on the beach around 3 p.m., wearing blue swim trunks, no shirt and sunglasses.

His friends came back to the mainland. Nolan did not.

Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter has said Nolan chose to stay on the island. Jackson County Chancery Judge Ashlee Cole, whose stepson was in the group, posted on Facebook that the boat that carried Nolan out to Horn Island headed back to the coast around 4:30 p.m. because it was taking on water. The commander of the United Cajun Navy has said Nolan stayed behind because he wanted to talk to a girl. Three accounts, one missing teenager, and no version yet that fully explains how he ended up alone.

Around 11 p.m., a friend reached out to the Coast Guard, which determined the situation did not require its assistance. Around midnight, Christine Wonsley called the sheriff’s department to report her son had not come home. By the next morning the search involved the sheriff’s department, the Department of Marine Resources, the National Park Service, the Coast Guard and the volunteer United Cajun Navy.

On the morning of July 6, a park ranger found a body in the water near the northwestern tip of Horn Island around 8:45. On July 7, Coroner Bruce Lynd confirmed through dental records that it was Nolan. An autopsy was performed that day at the state medical examiner’s office. The coroner has said he requested the state lab specifically because of the condition the body was found in and to establish definitively whether there was trauma. Results are still pending. Toxicology alone could take weeks.

Investigators have said they believe Nolan drowned and that they do not suspect foul play. The sheriff’s office is investigating this as a death, not a homicide.

The family is not accepting that. Ben Crump, retained the same day Nolan was identified, says Nolan’s father described his son as an elite athlete who knew how to swim. Crump has also said students recorded an altercation on the boats that day, describing Nolan and another person yelling at one another. He says Nolan’s friends took his phone with them when they left the island, and that when the family got the phone back, messages had been deleted.

The sheriff’s office, while publicly saying no foul play is suspected, has asked the public for original unedited photos and videos from the northwest tip of Horn Island, specifically anything depicting alleged altercations, and has asked to hear from anyone who saw or heard an argument or disturbance. Ledbetter has confirmed investigators are reviewing video and requested Nolan’s phone for forensic extraction.

On Friday, Christine and Elmore Wonsley stood at the National Action Network in New York with Crump and the Reverend Al Sharpton and demanded a full, transparent and urgent investigation. Sharpton said what the family has been told does not make sense. Tyler Perry is covering the funeral. Colin Kaepernick funded an independent autopsy being performed in Washington, D.C. by a pathologist with no ties to Mississippi law enforcement.

Nolan’s mother put it plainly at the podium. This was not how she wanted the world to meet her son.
