Megan Thee Stallion’s Interscope Deal Gives Her Global Reach Without Giving Up Ownership, And Indie Artists Should Take Notes

Megan Thee Stallion is proving once again that she’s playing chess while the rest of the industry plays checkers. The three-time Grammy winner just announced a new distribution partnership with Interscope Records, with her label calling it a major milestone in the next phase of her independent career and confirming she will retain complete ownership of her masters and publishing. For anyone who has followed Megan’s business moves over the past few years, this news lands as the latest chapter in a much bigger story about control, ownership, and building something that outlasts any single deal.

To understand why this matters, you have to go back to where Megan started this independent run. The move follows Megan’s continued focus on ownership and creative control after her split from 1501 Certified Entertainment, and it builds on a distribution arrangement she first entered with Warner Music Group back in 2024, which allowed her to stay independent while tapping into the resources of a major music company. That original Warner deal was a big deal in its own right at the time. The agreement let Megan keep full ownership of her masters and publishing, releasing all future music through her own imprint, Hot Girl Productions, while Warner Music Group and its international network handled distribution, radio promotion, and marketing on a global scale.

That 2024 partnership didn’t come out of nowhere either. Megan had split from her former label, 1501 Certified Entertainment, after a lengthy legal battle that ended in a mutual settlement. She originally alleged the label was blocking her from releasing new music back in 2020, and in 2022 she filed another complaint seeking a million dollars in damages over what she described as underpayment of royalties. That fight over money and creative control is exactly why every move she’s made since has been so intentional about who owns what.

Now with Interscope stepping in, Megan is choosing to work with one of the most prominent major labels in the industry, but on her own terms once again. The announcement notes that this new distribution partnership with Interscope allows her to stay true to her creative vision while also increasing her global reach. In her own words, Megan said she’s always wanted to create music on her terms while building a legacy that extends beyond the industry, and that this new deal supports exactly that. That phrase, legacy beyond the industry, says a lot about how she’s thinking these days. Music is clearly still the foundation, but it’s become one piece of a much bigger business she’s building around herself.

It’s also worth noting the timing. This deal comes just months after Megan landed the cover of Entrepreneur Magazine’s May and June 2026 issue, where she spoke openly about her business philosophy, her entrepreneurial journey, and her goals moving forward. Pairing a major distribution deal with a cover story built entirely around her business mind is not a coincidence. Megan has been laying the groundwork to be taken seriously as a mogul, not just a hitmaker, and this announcement fits directly into that narrative.

So what does this actually mean for her music going forward. In practical terms, not much changes creatively. Megan still owns her masters. She still owns her publishing. She’s still releasing everything through Hot Girl Productions, her own independent label. What Interscope brings to the table is muscle behind the release, meaning stronger global marketing, wider distribution reach, and the industry infrastructure that comes with partnering with a major label, all without her having to hand over the rights that she fought hard to keep in the first place.

This is also a sharp reminder of just how much Megan’s financial game has evolved. At just 30-years-old, turning 31 this year, she’s become one of the youngest female rappers to own both her masters and her publishing rights, a distinction that puts her in rare company within the industry. That ownership stake is a big part of why her net worth currently sits at around $40 million, built through touring, brand partnerships, a tequila brand, and yes, owning her own music outright. Every distribution deal she signs from here forward only adds to that foundation instead of chipping away at it.

For an artist who has been open about the legal battles it took to get free from a deal that didn’t serve her, watching her calmly negotiate partnership after partnership on her own terms is the real story here. This isn’t Megan signing away her career to a label. It’s Megan deciding which resources she wants to borrow while keeping full ownership of everything she’s built. The music is coming. The reach is expanding. And Megan Thee Stallion still owns every bit of it.
