Megan Thee Stallion is opening up about the emotional fallout from her relationship with Klay Thompson, and months after their breakup became public, she sounds much clearer about what she refuses to accept moving forward. The breakup ended what had once looked like one of entertainment and sports’ happiest new pairings, but Megan now says she realized she was trying to force herself into a life that did not fit.
Speaking with InStyle, Megan described the aftermath in terms that made it clear the breakup took a serious toll.
“I’m trying my best,” she said. “I feel like I’ve been put through the washing machine and the dryer with tins, shovels, and a cactus.”
Megan and Thompson first sparked dating speculation in July 2025 when fans spotted the NBA star in the background of one of her Instagram posts. Thompson followed with his own social media hints before they officially stepped out together on July 16 at Megan’s Pete & Thomas Foundation Gala in New York City.
At the time, Megan sounded smitten. She called their meeting a movie-like “meet cute” and described Thompson as the nicest person she had ever met. Thompson publicly supported Megan and praised her work with the foundation. From there, their romance played out across social media with workouts, golf outings, fishing trips, and other glimpses into their lives together.
By April 2026, the picture had changed dramatically.
Megan publicly accused Thompson of cheating in an Instagram Story and questioned his commitment to monogamy. Thompson did not publicly respond to the allegations at the time. Megan then confirmed that she had ended the relationship.
“Trust, fidelity, and respect are non-negotiable for me in a relationship, and when those values are compromised, there’s no real path forward.”
Now, she is explaining what was happening internally before she finally walked away.
“It was very rough. Especially….” Megan told InStyle before collecting her thoughts. “How do I want to say this gently? What’s meant for you is always going to work out. And if something is constantly making you feel uncomfortable, just on edge all the time, you probably are not supposed to be there. God will always make you uncomfortable when something is not meant for you. I think I just kept trying to make pieces fit that didn’t belong, trying to fit myself into someone else’s life. I was losing myself a little bit. I am now in the space of finding me again.”
Then came the line that left little room for interpretation about her standards going forward.
“You will not disrespect me. And you will be thankful. Period.”
For Megan, the lesson appears to extend beyond one relationship. The rapper says she understands more clearly that being someone’s partner cannot require becoming a smaller version of herself.
“I cannot be disrespected. I cannot be a person who is not gonna be me. I cannot not go to work. I’m going to be Megan Thee Stallion.”
She continued: “I love being me. I love rapping. I love interacting with my fans. I love shooting music videos. I’m not a person who is in the house 24-7. I’m never going to be that. And whoever dates me is gonna have to just understand, like, she is her own person. She’s her own boss. I cannot be minimized. I will not be behind any man. I will have a partner. I will be equals with my partner. I’m never gonna take the backseat to anything. So just going forward, I think I’ve just learned this is the type of person that I want to be with, this is what I will tolerate, this is what I won’t tolerate. And if you can’t take that, we just gotta respectfully go our separate ways.”
Megan also addressed the damage infidelity can do to a person’s self-esteem.
“Somebody not seeing your values doesn’t make your value go down,” she said. “People cheating on you, that doesn’t have anything to do with you. You’re not less attractive. You’re not less of a good person. Even though it might feel like that. Oh my gosh, why me? Why am I not enough? Cause it could definitely feel like, Why am I not enough?”
For now, Megan appears comfortable answering that question without another relationship waiting in the wings.
“Being by yourself is okay. Like, I ain’t smiled so much in so long. Like, I’m outside twirling in the grass like, Wow, it’s a beautiful day outside!” she said. “I don’t know the last time I did that.”
After a romance that went from a soft launch to red carpets and eventually a very public breakup, Megan’s latest chapter sounds less focused on finding another man and more focused on finding herself again.
