Meta, which owns Instagram and Facebook, has revealed that it is contemplating the possibility of introducing a new social media platform similar to Twitter.

A Meta spokesperson recently shared with Variety that the company is looking into creating a new platform that focuses on “sharing text updates.”

“We’re exploring a standalone, decentralized social network for sharing text updates,” the spokesperson said. “We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests.”

The idea of a new social media platform was first reported by Money Control, who also revealed the code name for the project as “P92.”

In addition, the proposed social media platform, will be built using the same framework as Mastodon, a Twitter-like service. Mastodon saw a surge in popularity following Elon Musk’s acquire the Twitter app, causing numerous users to migrate to similar alternatives.

There hasn’t been any other information regarding the details of the hypothetical platform. However, this isn’t the first time Meta has mimicked a service Twitter offered. Last month, Meta launched a new subscription service for Facebook and Instagram users called Meta Verified. The new feature offers a blue checkmark badge similar to Twitter Blue, as well as other exclusive benefits.
