Mexican soldiers raided a Culiacán warehouse on July 2, where they discovered about 1,200 pounds of fentanyl, 1,224 pounds of methamphetamines, 68 pounds of cocaine, 15 pounds of heroin, and 156,528 pounds of processing material.
The drugs are believed to have belonged to the Sinaloa Cartel, previously led by Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and now run by his children. The warehouse is a known gathering place for individuals involved in organized crime.
During a press conference on Thursday, Assistant Public Safety Secretary Ricardo Mejía said its the largest seizure in the history of the deadly drug. The fentanyl is valued at more than $200 million.
In addition to the drug seizure, ten people were arrested during the raid. However, it remains unknown who their leader is.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports over 100,000 people died from drug overdoses between April 2020 and April 2021. Fentanyl, which can be more than 100 times stronger than morphine, was considered the primary synthetic opioid responsible.
