M.I.A. was booted from Kid Cudi’s Rebel Ragers tour earlier this month after completing just four of a contracted 33-date run. The deal, worth just over $2.8 million, reportedly guaranteed her “sole and exclusive creative control” over her performances. On Friday, May 29, she filed suit against Cudi in California federal court, alleging he violated that agreement when he instructed Live Nation to remove her from the lineup.
Cudi Said “Offensive.” She Says That’s The Cover Story.
Cudi’s public response was brief — he said he “didn’t want anything offensive at [his] shows” and that M.I.A. was “making offensive remarks that upsets [his] fanbase.” Her legal complaint calls that account “riddled with falsehoods.” According to the suit, the real motive was commercial: she alleges she “was terminated to generate publicity for the tour, which has struggled with ticket sales,” and that Cudi “has ridiculed and attempted to ‘cancel’ M.I.A. to market the tour and sell tickets.”
The Onstage Moments That Set It Off
M.I.A.’s performances included condemnations of ICE, calls for a free Palestine, and remarks that raised eyebrows across social media. The lawsuit documents several direct quotes from what would become her final show:
“I’ve been cancelled for many things. I never thought I’d be cancelled for being a Republican voting American. So, I’ve come to meet you all in person. This is the ‘allow me to reintroduce myself’ tour.”
“Alright, I am illegal. Half of my team are not here because they didn’t get the visa, okay? I want you to know that. Alright, so don’t listen to what the bots say on the internet, okay. . . . We should be above politics.”
At the Kid Cudi concert with MIA she started randomly started talking about how she’s a Republican & how at that concert there’s probably a bunch of illegals that she’s having to play too. People started booing her & quite a few left & asked for a refund. She ended her career. pic.twitter.com/nc9w4QpiD9

The Price Tag Of Getting Cancelled
M.I.A.’s suit details the financial fallout she claims resulted from the firing: a $290,000 private party appearance that evaporated, a Los Angeles merchandise pop-up that never happened, and a potential sync licensing deal that fell through. She and her son also allegedly received death threats in the aftermath. Complex reached out to her attorney and received no immediate response; representation for Kid Cudi was not available at press time.
