Pat Riley Says Miami Heat Have No Plans to Trade Jimmy Butler

The Miami Heat announced Friday that they have suspended forward Jimmy Butler for seven games due to “conduct detrimental to the team” and confirmed their intent to trade the six-time All-Star. The suspension follows weeks of escalating tension between Butler and the organization, culminating in his public statements expressing dissatisfaction with his role in Miami.

“Through his actions and statements, he has shown he no longer wants to be part of this team,” the Heat said in an official statement.

The suspension begins immediately, ruling Butler out of Saturday’s home game against Utah and a six-game road trip against Sacramento, Golden State, Utah, Portland, the Los Angeles Clippers, and the Los Angeles Lakers. If Butler were to remain with the team, the earliest he could return would be January 17 in a home game against Denver, though the Heat’s announcement suggests Butler has likely played his last game in a Miami uniform.

The suspension follows Butler’s remarks during a postgame press conference on Thursday, where he openly questioned his future with the Heat. “I don’t believe I can be happy playing in Miami going forward,” Butler stated, fueling speculation about a potential trade.

“Probably not.”

“Jimmy Butler and his representative have indicated that they wish to be traded,” the team said. “Therefore, we will listen to offers.”

Butler, who joined the Heat in 2019, has been instrumental in the team’s success, including a trip to the NBA Finals in 2020.
