Police in Miami say a man was arrested on Monday after he allegedly tried to sell a custom ring stolen from the hotel room of New York City jeweler Eric Mavashev, who is known online as Eric The Jeweler.
According to Local 10 News, Mavashev was staying at the Mondrian South Beach Hotel for Super Bowl weekend when his room was broken into on Sunday. Police said a safe holding between $1.3 million and $1.7 million in jewelry was taken, along with a large amount of cash.
Authorities say an anonymous source contacted detectives on Monday and said someone was trying to sell jewelry that he admitted was stolen. Police say a 30 year old man named Xandi met with the tipster at the Seybold building and showed off a custom ring with a large clear stone surrounded by smaller stones.
Police said the tipster told Xandi he was not interested, and Xandi claimed the ring had come from a vehicle. When he left, officers detained him.
Authorities say Mavashev confirmed the ring was one of the pieces taken from his room. It was not clear whether any of the other jewelry or the cash had been recovered.
Xandi faces charges of burglary, grand theft and dealing in stolen property. Those are accusations, and he has not been convicted of anything.
