A Miami mother accused of killing her young son is now facing a possible death sentence after a grand jury indicted her on a first degree murder charge.
According to the Miami Herald, a Miami grand jury indicted Patricia this week in the death of her 9 year old son, Alejandro, who had autism and was unable to speak. Police say the incident was captured on camera on May 21. The grand jury process had been delayed for months because of COVID 19. At a court hearing on Thursday, prosecutors said they intend to pursue the death penalty.
The Miami Herald’s David Ovalle reports that she faces several other felony charges and will remain in jail until trial. Because the death penalty is now on the table, she did not appear at the brief Thursday hearing. Another hearing is scheduled for next week.
Police say Alejandro was reported missing and an Amber Alert was issued after Patricia told officers that two men had taken him following a road incident near West Kendall. His body was found the next day in a canal near the Miccosukee Golf and Country Club, about four miles from where she said the abduction happened.
Police say that when officers questioned her, she admitted the kidnapping story was not true. According to a report, she told authorities she led him to the canal and said he was going to be in a better place.
The charges are allegations, and the case is still moving through the court system.
