Michael Jackson’s Biopic Survived Critics And Messy Reviews To Secure A Historic $1 Billion Bag

The “Michael” box office run has officially entered territory no biographical film has reached before, proving that Michael Jackson’s influence remains powerful enough to move audiences across generations and continents.

“Michael” has earned $1,001,707,125 worldwide since arriving in theaters. The total includes $371,865,125 from the domestic market and $629,842,000 from international territories. That means nearly 63 percent of the movie’s earnings have come from outside the United States and Canada, offering a clear picture of how deeply Jackson’s music and cultural impact continue to resonate around the world.

The latest Michael box office achievement makes the movie the first biopic in history to cross the $1 billion mark. The movie reached the milestone on July 12, nearly three months after its April 24 theatrical release in the United States. The publication also reports that Michael is the first Lionsgate release to generate more than $1 billion globally.

Before reaching 10 figures, the movie had already rewritten the record books for stories based on real people. “Michael” surpassed the $975.8 million worldwide total earned by Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” making it the highest-grossing biographical film ever released. That accomplishment came after “Michael” passed “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the Freddie Mercury film that completed its worldwide run with approximately $910.9 million.

The international breakdown makes the “Michael” box office story even more significant. According to Box Office Mojo, the movie has generated more than $71.4 million in the United Kingdom, $57 million in France and $37 million in Germany. Brazil has contributed nearly $34 million, while Australia and Mexico have each added approximately $32 million. Those results show that the film was not carried by one region or one especially successful market. Audiences across Europe, Latin America and the Asia Pacific region turned Jackson’s life story into a worldwide theatrical event.

The film also arrived with major momentum in North America. “Michael” earned $97,206,874 during its domestic opening weekend while playing in 3,955 theaters. The performance established an immediate foundation for the sustained run that eventually pushed the movie beyond the billion-dollar threshold.

At the center of that success is Jaafar Jackson, the son of Jermaine Jackson and the nephew of Michael Jackson. Jaafar made his feature film debut while portraying his uncle from his early rise through his transformation into a global entertainment icon. Juliano Krue Valdi portrays Michael during his childhood, including the years when his talent emerged as the lead singer of the Jackson 5.

The cast places several respected Black performers inside one of the year’s largest commercial productions. Nia Long portrays Katherine Jackson, while Colman Domingo plays Joe Jackson, the family patriarch who managed “Michael” and his brothers during their Jackson 5 years. The cast also includes Miles Teller as attorney and manager John Branca, Laura Harrier as Motown executive Suzanne de Passe and Mike Myers as CBS Records executive Walter Yetnikoff.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, the movie focuses primarily on Jackson’s childhood, family relationships, early performances and climb toward becoming one of the biggest entertainers in recorded music history. The production was created to present audiences with a broad look at the person behind the performances as well as the artistic ambition that shaped his career.

The “Michael” box office success is especially notable because the movie carries the responsibility of dramatizing the life of an artist whose story remains both celebrated and debated. The film’s promotional logline promised an “honest portrayal of the brilliant yet complicated” singer. Rather than limiting the production to a concert recreation, the filmmakers built the story around Jackson’s family life, professional discipline and evolution from a gifted child performer into an international superstar.

The first movie does not cover every period of Jackson’s life. The story ends in 1988, leaving later albums, tours, relationships and controversies outside the current film. Miles Teller told the publication that work on another installment was underway and said: “The team is excited to complete that story.” Lionsgate has not announced a final release date for a second film.

For Lionsgate, the “Michael” box office milestone also establishes a new studio record. The company’s previous highest-grossing release was “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” which earned approximately $865.2 million worldwide. “Michael” has now exceeded that total by more than $136 million, giving the studio its first entry in the billion-dollar club.

Only one other 2026 movie has crossed the same threshold. “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” currently leads the year with approximately $1.009 billion worldwide, while “Michael” ranks second with slightly more than $1.001 billion. The difference between the two movies is less than $8 million, meaning the yearly worldwide box office crown remains within reach as additional ticket sales are reported.

The “Michael” box office run ultimately represents more than a studio victory or another impressive number attached to Jackson’s name. It reflects the lasting reach of a Black artist whose sound, movement, fashion and visual imagination helped change popular entertainment. With international audiences supplying most of the movie’s revenue, the billion-dollar milestone confirms that Michael Jackson’s cultural footprint remains global, commercially powerful and capable of drawing moviegoers decades after his most defining performances.
