Almost 2 years after Jordan Davis, 17 was shot and killed by Michael Dunn, 47; a Florida judge sentenced Dunn to life in prison without parole. Judge Healey made the subsequent statement to Dunn during sentencing: “Mr. Dunn, your life is effectively over; what is sad… is that this case exemplifies that our society seems to have lost its way.”Dunn was convicted this February of 1 count of shooting into a vehicle and 3 counts of attempted second degree murder for Davis’ 3 friends who were also in the car at the time of the shooting. The jury was hung on the first degree murder charge, but earlier this month during a retrial, Dunn was convicted of 1st degree murder. Michael Dunn shot into the Dodge Durango full of teens on the night of November 23, 2012 at a gas station in Jacksonville, FL. The 2 cars had been engaged in an argument over loud music inside the teens’ vehicle. Dunn did not call the police after the shooting, instead he went to a hotel with his then-fiancée, ordered a pizza, and walked his dog. Dunn apologized today before sentencing for the first time to Jordan’s parents. Jordan’s parent’s both spoke before sentencing occurred stating the following: “I miss his big, wide, toothy smile,” she said. “For me, there will be no college graduation. There will be no daughter-in-law. For me, there will be no future generation.”(Statement from Jordan’s mother Lucia MacBath); “My life as I had known it was shattered on November 23, 2012,” he told the court. “I now call it Black Friday for a completely different reason. After the longest hour of my life, the hospital confirmed that Jordan Russell Davis was deceased in the emergency room. … The old Ron Davis died that night with Jordan.”(Statement from Jordan’s father Ron Davis). Although a son is gone too soon, at least Jordan Davis’ parents received something that Trayvon Martin’s parents still long for…justice. R.I.P Jordan Davis
